The Thirsty Ghost of 1984

July. In a cul de sac. The air is thick enough to chew, smelling of hot asphalt and chlorine. You are ten years old. Your transportation is a Schwinn with a banana seat and enough chrome to blind a low-flying pilot.

You haven’t seen the inside of a house since breakfast. You are dusty. You are sun-baked. You are, quite frankly, a menace to the local shrubbery. When the thirst hits, you don’t look for a glass. You look for the green rubber hose coiled like a snake by the foundation. The water tastes of minerals, garden soil, and absolute liberty.

This is not a t-shirt. It is a portal.

The Specification:
The Fabric. A brutally heavy 6.1 oz. U.S. cotton. It has been pre-shrunk to survive the indignity of being used as a towel after a sudden leap into a neighbor’s sprinkler. It feels like the weight of a long summer afternoon.
The Dye. Garment-dyed to achieve a specific, lived-in patina. It mimics the ghost of melted push-pops and the fine silt of a dirt road shortcut. It hides nostalgia and hose water with equal grace.
The Architecture. Tubular knit. No side seams. Side seams are for people who read the instructions and come inside when they’re called. Double-needle stitching throughout to withstand the rigors of bike tag and the occasional tumble into the gravel.
The Interrogation. Across the chest, the word “THIRSTY?” is rendered in bold defiance. It is not an inquiry. It is an accusation. It is a dare to find a spigot and drink deep.

Maintenance of the Grudge:
Wash cold. As cold as the water from the spigot behind the garage.
No bleach. Your memories are many things, but they are certainly not pure.
Tumble dry low. Let the drum mimic the punishing heat of a July Sunday.
Ironing. A low setting is permitted, though ironing a tribute to entropy seems a bit like putting a suit on a wolf.
No dry cleaning. This garment was born with the spirit of dirt under a ten-year-old’s fingernails. Respect its heritage.
